A medical perspective on the Swiss Sleep System
Andreas J. Wüest, M.D.
FMH Rheumatology, Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation

When purchasing a bed and mattress, one should consider health factors as well as comfort and esthetics. This is true at any time, not only when we are ill.
In addition to the mattress itself, the elasticity of the slat base plays an important role in distributing pressure, which is related to deformation of the spine. It is well known that the disks, with their cartilage pads and fibrous rings, are especially sensitive to improper positioning due to uneven pressure, and that this leads to nutritional disorders and dehydration of the disk tissue.
For this reason, waterbeds and innerspring mattresses are often unsuitable, whereas bed supports made of springy wooden or plastic cross slats of adjustable height and shape (for the head, back and feet) have proven appropriate for the spine, and can be especially helpful to patients suffering from certain illnesses.
For example, a semi-reclined position of the upper body is therapeutic for cardiac problems with central buildup, while patients with chronic venous insufficiency benefit from elevation of the lower extremities.
The mattress also plays an important role. It should be neither too hard nor too soft. Recommendations for modern mattresses must take into consideration the possible effects of hygiene on health. Traditional innerspring mattresses made of natural materials that have not been appropriately treated promote the presence of mites, and are therefore particularly unsuitable for anyone suffering from allergies.
In summary, the Swiss Sleep System is beneficial to patients with the following medical conditions:

Do you sleep healthy?
Swiss TV Doctor Samuel Stutz recommends for healthy sleep
Who sleeps healthy has more fun in life.
4 easy steps will improve your life quality through a personalized bedding:
Which are your personal habits and sleeping-rituals?
What is important in order to correctly storage your body?
Which bed climate is the proper one for you?
Do you know about the right hygiene and care taking?
For the optimal balance of the body during sleep the interaction of the lower slat base and the mattress are important. The slat base construction with its upside arched wooden slats supports the body while the mattress determines the laying comfort.
Some few cents per night are a good investment in your health.
How expensive may a high quality sleep system be? Or ask yourself differently: What is the value I am willing to acknowledge for a healthy sleep? One, two or more dollars per night? You will be astonished: One of the best combinations of Mattress and Slat base such as Locarno Clima and Astro-flex will cost you only 85 cents per night, calculated on a ten years life span.
